Practical Australian advice

The Australian solar panel cleaning guide

How to tell when panels need cleaning, what rain leaves behind, what a safe clean involves and when the energy recovery is likely to matter.

Do solar panels need cleaning in Australia?

Sometimes, yes. Rain removes loose surface dust but often leaves salt, pollen, road film, ash, lichen and bird droppings. Low-pitch panels are especially likely to hold a grime line along the lower frame.

The sensible test is not whether panels look imperfect. It is whether bonded soiling is reducing useful light and whether the likely recovery justifies safe access and cleaning.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

For many homes, every 6 to 12 months is a useful starting point. That interval should change with the site. Coastal salt, nearby trees, birds, agriculture, construction, bushfire ash, low panel pitch and long dry seasons can justify more frequent cleaning. See our simple cleaning schedule by property type for a site-by-site breakdown.

After prolonged dry, dusty weather
When bird droppings create hard shading
After nearby construction or bushfire ash
When monitored output falls beyond seasonal change

How much energy can dirty panels lose?

There is no honest universal number. Light dust may have a small effect, while heavy, uneven or long-term soiling can be much more significant. WATTASOL uses a broad 5% to 25% recovery range in its estimator so consumers can compare scenarios rather than receive a guarantee.

System monitoring is the best evidence. Compare similar clear days, account for seasons and shade, and look for a sustained change rather than one poor day.

What is a safe cleaning method?

Use panel-safe soft brushes, controlled water and natural cleaning agents suitable for the deposit. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh household detergents, pressure washers and walking on panels. Clean during cooler conditions to reduce thermal stress and fast drying.

Roof safety comes first. Do not climb onto a roof without suitable training, access equipment and fall protection. Solar arrays also contain live electrical equipment whenever exposed to light.

When should you use a professional?

Use a professional when panels are on a roof, access is difficult, the array is large, site safety controls apply, or stubborn contamination needs the correct method. Ask what cleaning agents and equipment will be used, how the team handles height safety, and whether you receive proof of the result.

WATTASOL uses natural cleaning agents, panel-safe equipment and supplies a free before and after report. An optional topical treatment is available where reducing future grime adhesion makes sense.
